The HopeLine

"Linea de la Esperanza"

The HopeLine, or "La Linea de la Esperanza", as most people know us, has been serving the needs of the South Bronx Community since 1990. The majority of those seeking our services are from Latin America. However, our doors open to anyone from the community who is in immediate need.


Twenty years ago, Bishop Francisco Garmendia, Vicar of the South Bronx, and Mr. James P. McLaughlin, President of United Parcel Service (UPS), recognized a need in the community for a bilingual telephone counseling and referral service. The HopeLine became a single-stop center for people to turn to for advice and guidance. Today we have evolved into a full service outreach organization working in one of the poorest congressional districts in the United States. Our goal is to give our clients the critical skills and assistance they need to be strong and healthy family members, positive role models in their communities, and productive members of society.


The organization recently appointed Mr. Jairo Guzmán as the Executive Director. He brings experience working with one of the largest Catholic social service agencies in New York City and local government agencies. Mr. Guzmán will be working closely with the Bronx Community, City agencies, the Board of Directors, and private funders to secure the future of The HopeLine.


In celebration of our 20th Anniversary, The HopeLine will launch in the coming months two major initiatives the goal of both will be to continue to raise awareness of The HopeLine's current services and assure its future programming.


Presently, The HopeLine provides the following programs:

  •  food pantry feeding thousands of children and families through each month;
  •  clothing bank providing much needed clothing to individuals and families;
  •  civics and citizenship program designed to help individuals to gain the knowledge needed to become US citizens
  •  literacy program focusing on bringing each person's reading and writing skills up to standard in their native language and learning English as a Second Language.
